Scripture:

2 KINGS 1:1-18, 2 KINGS 3:1-27, 1 KINGS 22:41-49, 2 CHRONICLES 20:31-37, 1 KINGS 22:50, 2 CHRONICLES 21:1-4, 2 KINGS 8:16-22, 2 CHRONICLES 21:5-7

No Faith

After King Ahab’s death, the land of Moab rebelled against Israel.

One day Israel’s new king, Ahaziah, fell through the latticework of an upper room at his palace in Samaria and was seriously injured. So he sent messengers to the temple of Baal-zebub, the god of Ekron, to ask whether he would recover.

But the angel of the LORD told Elijah, who was from Tishbe, “Go and confront the messengers of the king of Samaria and ask them, ‘Is there no God in Israel? Why are you going to Baal-zebub, the god of Ekron, to ask whether the king will recover? Now, therefore, this is what the LORD says: You will never leave the bed you are lying on; you will surely die.’” So Elijah went to deliver the message.

2 Kings 1:1-4

My Takeaways

Something Old

And Elijah said to the king, “This is what the LORD says: Why did you send messengers to Baal-zebub, the god of Ekron, to ask whether you will recover? Is there no God in Israel to answer your question? Therefore, because you have done this, you will never leave the bed you are lying on; you will surely die.”
2 Kings 1:16

Something New

  • 2 Kings continues with the wicked sins of the kings of Israel and Judah.
  • Ahaziah was the successor to the most wicked king who had ever ruled Israel, Ahab.
  • Ahaziah failed to learn from his father’s mistakes.
  • God judged Ahaziah with a short two-year reign.
  • Studying what Ahaziah failed to do is a great lesson for us today.
  • God tested Ahaziah with a foreign rebellion.
  • God tested Ahaziah with poor health.
  • Ahaziah failed these tests.
  • God wants people to have faith in Him alone.
  • Ahaziah turned to a false god for deliverance, Baal-zebub.
  • His actions showed that he had no faith in God.
  • If you turn to the things of this world to solve your problems, the result will be a disaster.
  • Ahaziah’s ultimate sin was his inability to have faith in God.
  • “And it is impossible to please God without faith. Anyone who wants to come to him must believe that God exists and that he rewards those who sincerely seek him.”
    Hebrews 11:6

Something To Do

Believe that God is Who He says He is. Believe that God can do what He says He can do. Walk by faith.
