So I came to hate life because everything done here under the sun is so troubling. Everything is meaningless—like chasing the wind.
Ecclesiastes 2:17
It’s a very negative and pessimistic book. Solomon tries to find a meaningful life apart from God. He follows the world’s under the sun rules:
- work hard
- enjoy life
- have fun
- be nice
- don’t get caught doing wrong
- try not to hurt anybody.
Life without God and apart from His sustaining power is empty, futile, and meaningless and strongly resembles chasing the wind.
A life of meaning is a life lived for the glory of God
- Bring my sons from far away, and my daughters from the ends of the earth—everyone who bears my name and is created for my glory. I have formed them; indeed, I have made them.
Isaiah 43:6b-7‍ - I give thanks to you, O LORD my God, with my whole heart, and I will glorify your name forever.Â
Psalm 86:12 (ESV) ‍ - Not to us, O LORD, not to us, but to your name give glory, for the sake of your steadfast love and your faithfulness!
Psalm 115:1 (ESV) ‍ - So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.
1 Corinthians 10:31 (ESV) ‍ - In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.Â
Matthew 5:16 (ESV) ‍ - Worthy are you, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they existed and were created.Â
Revelation 4:11 (ESV)Â
How do we live for His glory?
- Seek Him
Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.
Matthew 6:33 - Love and obey Him.
If you love me, you will keep my commandments.Â
John 14:15 (ESV)Â - Serve Him
Only fear the LORD and serve him faithfully with all your heart. For consider what great things he has done for you.Â
1 Samuel 12:24 (ESV)
Anything I wanted; I would take. I denied myself no pleasure. I even found great pleasure in hard work, a reward for all my labors.
Ecclesiastes 2:10
What work, hard work did Solomon ever do?
Love and live a meaningful life. It’s what God has planned for you, Wendy.
