Scripture:

1 KINGS 2:1-9, 2 SAMUEL 23:1-7, 1 KINGS 2:10-12, 1 CHRONICLES 29:26-30, PSALM 4-6, PSALM 8-9, PSALM 11

Final Words

These are the last words of David:

“David, the son of Jesse, speaks—David, the man who was raised up so high,
David, the man anointed by the God of Jacob, David, the sweet psalmist of Israel.

“The Spirit of the Lord speaks through me; his words are upon my tongue.
The God of Israel spoke. The Rock of Israel said to me:
‘The one who rules righteously, who rules in the fear of God,
is like the light of morning at sunrise, like a morning without clouds,
like the gleaming of the sun on new grass after rain.’

“Is it not my family God has chosen?
Yes, he has made an everlasting covenant with me.
His agreement is arranged and guaranteed in every detail.
He will ensure my safety and success.
But the godless are like thorns to be thrown away,
for they tear the hand that touches them.
One must use iron tools to chop them down;
they will be totally consumed by fire.”

2 Samuel 23:1-7

My Takeaways

Something Old

Then David died and was buried with his ancestors in the City of David.
1 Kings 2:10

Something New

  • There are many places in Scripture that record the final speeches of Old Testament saints.
  • There may not have been the exact “final words” spoken by the person, but rather the final words of importance.
  • Jacob: Genesis 49
  • Joshua: Joshua 24
  • Samuel: 1 Samuel 12
  • Today’s text records “the final words” of David.
  • These words of David were given as an oracle.
  • The Spirit of the Lord gave the words to David for the good of all of the people.
  • These prophetic words look forward to the Eternal King and Eternal Kingdom.
  • The Eternal King rules in justice.
  • The Eternal Kingdom brings new life.
  • Earthly kings will disappoint.
  • John 14:6
  • Romans 8:18-25
  • The Eternal King brings life to the world.

Something To Do

Remember to look for Jesus in all Scripture. He is at the center of everything!
