As the war between the house of Saul and the house of David went on, Abner became a powerful leader among those loyal to Saul.‍

2 Samuel 3:6

That was the beginning of a long war between those who were loyal to Saul and those loyal to David. As time passed David became stronger and stronger, while Saul’s dynasty became weaker and weaker.
2 Samuel 3:1

War will continue until peace rules: rules in the heart of every man and Christ returns to rule and reign on the earth.

Peace apart from a relationship with Christ isn’t possible.

This is the peace every Believer should strive for:

And the peace of God, which transcend all understanding, will guard your hearts and mind in Christ Jesus.

the tranquil state of a soul assured of its salvation through Christ, and so fearing nothing from God and content with its earthly lot, of whatsoever sort that is

It’s not absent of war and trials… it’s in spite of them.

This peace will 

• Transcend our understanding; be superior, excel, surpass.
• Guard our heart and mind properly, to guard (keep watch) like a military sentinel; (figuratively) to actively display whatever defensive and offensive means are necessary to guard.

What David knew about God’s which brought Him peace:

• A very present help in time of trouble. (Psalm 46:1)
• A strength and shield. (Psalm 28:7)
• A rescue from the miry pit. (Psalm 40:2) 
• A rock and salvation; he is my fortress (Psalm 62:2)
• A fortress (Psalm 62:2)
• A strength and fortress (Psalm 59:9)
• A helper (Psalm 54:4)
• A safe place (Psalm 4:8)
• A shelter for the oppressed (Psalm 9:9)
• A refuge in times of trouble (Psalm 9:9)
• A promise keeper (Psalm 12:6) 

Abner knew that God had chosen David to be king. I wonder how well-known this truth was among the nation.

May God strike me and even kill me if I don’t do everything I can to help David get what the LORD has promised him!
