Scripture:

1 SAMUEL 26:1-27:7, 1 CHRONICLES 12:1-7, 1 SAMUEL 27:8-29:11, 1 CHRONICLES 12:19, PSALM 56

What Do I Do When I’m Afraid?

But when I am afraid, I will put my trust in you.‍

Psalm 56:3

My Takeaways

Something Old

How did David survive the back stabbing, word twisting, and all the plots against him? What did he do when he was afraid?

How can we survive the back stabbing, word twisting, and plots against us? What do we do when we are afraid?

  • Tell yourself truth. (Psalm 56:3)
  • Praise God. (Psalm 56:4, 10, 11)
  • Trust in what I know.  Get to know God so God is what I know. (Psalm 56:9)
  • Boast of the Lord’s faithfulness (Psalm 56:10)

When I fear, remember?

  • Fear is not from God.
For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline.
    2 Timothy 1:7
  • Fear is an invitation to trust God’s care for me.
So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.

    Isaiah 41:10
  • Fear is an opportunity to experience God’s comfort and protection.
Even when I walk through the darkest valley, I will not be afraid, for you are close beside me. Your rod and your staff protect and comfort me.

    Psalm 23:4
  • Fear will not separate me from God’s love.
And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love.
    Romans 8:38-39

I love this quote from Max Lucado! "The presence of fear does not mean you have no faith. Fear visits everyone. But make your fear a visitor and not a resident."

Something New

Saul keeps calling David, "son".

Saul recognized David’s voice and called out, “Is that you, my son David?”
1 Samuel 26:17

Then Saul confessed, “I have sinned. Come back home, my son, and I will no longer try to harm you, for you valued my life today. I have been a fool and very, very wrong.”
1 Samuel 26:21

And Saul said to David, “Blessings on you, my son David. You will do many heroic deeds, and you will surely succeed.” Then David went away, and Saul returned home.
1 Samuel 26:25

Something To Do

I’m so thankful there are equipping verses for fear.
