Scripture:

NUMBERS 16:1-18:32

Sons of Korah

And Moses said, “This is how you will know that the LORD has sent me to do all these things that I have done—for I have not done them on my own. If these men die a natural death, or if nothing unusual happens, then the LORD has not sent me. But if the LORD does something entirely new and the ground opens its mouth and swallows them and all their belongings, and they go down alive into the grave, then you will know that these men have shown contempt for the LORD.”

He had hardly finished speaking the words when the ground suddenly split open beneath them. The earth opened its mouth and swallowed the men, along with their households and all their followers who were standing with them, and everything they owned. So they went down alive into the grave, along with all their belongings. The earth closed over them, and they all vanished from among the people of Israel.‍

Numbers 16:28-33

My Takeaways

Something Old

They united against Moses and Aaron and said, “You have gone too far! The whole community of Israel has been set apart by the LORD, and he is with all of us. What right do you have to act as though you are greater than the rest of the LORD’s people?”

Numbers 16:3

Something New

  • Korah was a Levite who served in the Tabernacle.
  • Korah was the cousin of Moses and Aaron.
  • Korah rebelled because he was not a priest like Aaron.
  • Korah was not content in God’s calling and coveted the position of priest.
  • He clearly violated God’s command that the position of priest come from the sons of Aaron.
  • God pronounced judgment on those that were in rebellion.
  • Numbers 16:32 says the ground swallowed up Korah’s household and every man that belonged to Korah.
  • Numbers 26:11 makes it clear that the sons of Korah did not die.
  • Rather than follow the sins of their earthly father, they chose obedience to God.
  • They did not walk in their father’s sins…they did not “belong to Korah.”
  • They sided with Moses and Israel and remained faithful to the LORD.
  • The sons of Korah wrote Psalms 42; 44-49; 84; 85; 87; 88.
  • God’s mercy is extended toward those who repent from the sins of their fathers, that change the direction of their family.
  • God will judge the children of the wicked, if the children continue to walk in the same sin.
  • God is merciful and forgiving.
  • God shows steadfast love to those who love Him and keep His commands.
  • The sons of Korah chose a different path than their father…one of obedience and not sin.
  • It can all change in one generation.
