Scripture:

LEVITICUS 23:1-25:23

Awake My Soul

Then the LORD said to Moses, “Be careful to celebrate the Day of Atonement on the tenth day of that same month—nine days after the Festival of Trumpets. You must observe it as an official day for holy assembly, a day to deny yourselves and present special gifts to the LORD. ‍

Leviticus 23:26-27

My Takeaways

Something Old

This will be a Sabbath day of complete rest for you, and on that day you must deny yourselves. This day of rest will begin at sundown on the ninth day of the month and extend until sundown on the tenth day.
Leviticus 23:32‍

Then Jesus said to his disciples, “If any of you wants to be my follower, you must give up your own way, take up your cross, and follow me."
Matthew 16:24

Something New

Yom Kippur concludes the week of celebrating the beginning of the Jewish new year.

They say a liturgical poem called a piyyut (peeyoot).

  • Do I take a time to remember that ALL my sins, all of them have been atoned for?
  • Do I thank God enough that I don’t have to spend one week of every year mulling over my mess ups in “hopes” that my name will be moved to the forgiven book?

Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine, of what a foretaste of glory divine!

Atonement is reconciliation between sinful man and the holy God. Reconciliation is possible through the atoning sacrifice of Jesus Christ.

  • God presented Christ as a sacrifice of atonement, through the shedding of his blood—to be received by faith. He did this to demonstrate his righteousness, because in his forbearance he had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished.
    Romans 3:25 (NIV)
  • Not only is this so, but we also boast in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.
    Romans 5:11 (NIV)
  •  For just as through the disobedience of the one man the many were made sinners, so also through the obedience of the one man the many will be made righteous.
    Romans 5:19 (NIV)

Our response to this atonement is the same as the Jewish people: prayer, repentance and charity…. not to receive the atonement, but because of it.

  • The severe decree of our sin has been averted by Jesus.
  • Rather than afflict our souls with remembering our sin, let us awaken our souls with gratitude, praise, and worship of the who atoned for our sin so that we would not have to.
