Scripture:

LEVITICUS 20:1-22:33

Jesus, Only Jesus

“You must faithfully keep all my commands by putting them into practice, for I am the LORD. Do not bring shame on My holy name, for I will display My holiness among the people of Israel. I am the LORD who makes you holy. It was I who rescued you from the land of Egypt, that I might be Your God. I am the LORD.”‍

Leviticus 22:31-33

My Takeaways

Something Old

The LORD said to Moses, “Give the people of Israel these instructions, which apply both to native Israelites and to the foreigners living in Israel.

“If any of them offer their children as a sacrifice to Molech, they must be put to death. The people of the community must stone them to death. I myself will turn against them and cut them off from the community, because they have defiled My sanctuary and brought shame on My holy name by offering their children to Molech. And if the people of the community ignore those who offer their children to Molech and refuse to execute them, I Myself will turn against them and their families and will cut them off from the community. This will happen to all who commit spiritual prostitution by worshiping Molech."
Leviticus 20:1-5

Something New

  • Reading the Bible well means understanding the biblical genre in context.
  • We often get “bogged down” when not reading in context.
  • We read law like it is historical narrative, or descriptive passages as prescriptive.
  • Let’s zoom out today and put law in context.
  • All the laws in the Bible are part of a story that finds fulfillment in Jesus.
  • The 611 laws in the Bible can bore us, confuse us, fascinate us, and many other things.
  • The law is a magnifying glass that should help us discern the will of God…but it also magnifies the human condition.
  • God has wanted a people that can listen to His voice.
  • By listening to His voice, His people are able to fulfill this partnership of ruling and resting in creation.
  • The thing Adam and Eve got wrong, and we all have since.
  • Except Jesus.
  • Messiah is going to bring about true fulfillment of the Law.
  • Messiah is going to listen to the Voice.
  • Messiah is going to do everything the law requires. Every command from Genesis 3 forward.
  • Jesus let God be the One who knows.
  • That is true wisdom.
  • We will continue to look at this throughout the Old Testament.

Something To Do

We need to understand that it has always been about relationship. Jesus brings us back into relationship with God.
