Learning from What We Know AND Don’t Know

One day a guest arrived at the home of the rich man. But instead of killing an animal from his own flock or herd, he took the poor man’s lamb and killed it and prepared it for his guest.

2 Samuel 12:4

My Takeaways

Something Old

In the spring of the year, when kings normally go out to war, David sent Joab and the Israelite army to fight the Ammonites.
2 Samuel 11:1a

Something New

  • Note: I mentioned that David could well have known the woman was Bathsheba. Perhaps he recognized her? Did he know it was Uriah’s house? English translations of the Hebrew text cannot give us a definitive answer that he did or did not know her. Though it seems obvious because he inquired about her, Ancient Hebrew was not written with the same grammatical context that seems obvious to us in English. In several translations David’s men ask, Isn’t this Bathsheba? That tells us that David may have already known. My point in the video was that we DO know that David had known Uriah the Hittite a long time, and knowing his wife would have been possible. The text does not definitively say that he did or did not know it was Bathsheba. Sorry for any confusion, I should have expanded on this in the video. 2 Samuel 11:3:
    • And Dovid sent and inquired after the isha. And one said, Is not this Bat-Sheva Bat Eli’am, eshet Uriyah the Chitti?  Orthodox Jewish Bible
    • David sent to ask about her, and was told, “Isn’t this Bathsheba, daughter of Eliam and wife of Uriah the Hittite?” (MSG)
    •  David sent someone to inquire about the woman. It was reported, “This is Bathsheba daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite.” (NRSVUE)
  • Bathsheba may not have had a choice. Hagar and Bilhah and Zilpah probably did not have a choice.
  • Nathan’s parable communicated that the lamb was taken by the rich man.
  • Adultery during this time was punishable by death, but Hagar, Bilhah, Zilpah, and Bathsheba were not accused of adultery.
  • The harem of a former king would become the responsibility of the new king. Absalom tried to usurp David’s power by his misconduct with David's wives. IVP Bible Background Commentary These women may not have had a choice.

Something to do

We can recognize sin when we are studying the Bible, and learn how God wants us to live, while also recognizing various contexts of the Bible that cast a more complex picture of the sin that is highlighted in it.
