Lovingkindness

One day David asked, “Is anyone in Saul’s family still alive—anyone to whom I can show kindness for Jonathan’s sake?”

2 Samuel 9:1

Some time after this, King Nahash of the Ammonites died, and his son Hanun became king. David said, “I am going to show loyalty to Hanun just as his father, Nahash, was always loyal to me.” So David sent ambassadors to express sympathy to Hanun about his father’s death.

Something Old

In the spring of the year, when kings normally go out to war, David sent Joab and the Israelite army to fight the Ammonites. They destroyed the Ammonite army and laid siege to the city of Rabbah. However, David stayed behind in Jerusalem.

  • David sought out Mephibosheth, Jonathan’s crippled son, and showed him great kindness. 
  • David remembered the covenant he had with Jonathan and wanted to show kindness to Mephibosheth in return. 
  • David’s kindness transformed Mephibosheth from a man facing potential death to a respected member of the royal court. 
  • David showed kindness to Hanun, the son of Nahash, in response to the kindness that Nahash had shown to David. 
  • David sent messengers to comfort Hanun about his father’s death, hoping to maintain good relations. 
  • David’s act of kindness was met with cruelty. 
  • David was known for his compassion. 
  • David was known for his ability to see the needs of others. 
  • David’s acts of kindness were a reflection of God’s own kindness. 
  • David demonstrated a heart that prioritized compassion, loyalty, and forgiveness, even when it wasn’t easy.
