Scripture:

2 SAMUEL 3:6-4:12

We Need a Righteous King!

As the war between the house of Saul and the house of David went on, Abner became a powerful leader among those loyal to Saul.

2 Samuel 3:6

My Takeaways

Something Old

Meanwhile, Abner had consulted with the elders of Israel. “For some time now,” he told them, “you have wanted to make David your king. Now is the time! For the LORD has said, ‘I have chosen David to save my people Israel from the hands of the Philistines and from all their other enemies.’”
2 Samuel 3:17-18

Something New

  • 1 & 2 Samuel were originally written as one long book.
  • The length of the scroll made it necessary to be split.
  • 1 Samuel focuses on three main characters: Samuel, Saul, and David.
  • Israel demanded a king.
  • Saul was the king that the people demanded.
  • It becomes apparent that David is a much better king than Saul.
  • 2 Samuel opens with David mourning the death of Saul.
  • 1 Samuel shows the faults in Saul’s character.
  • 2 Samuel highlights the differences of David.
  • David does many good things for Israel.
  • David is a sinner too.
  • The difference is David’s heart of repentance.
  • Even David could not remain completely righteous for Israel.
  • 2 Samuel points Israel to one thing: Jesus as King.
  • Israel’s desire to have a righteous king would not be satisfied until the coming of Jesus.
  • When we read of David’s sinfulness we look at our own sinfulness as well.
  • We understand our need for the perfect, righteous, and holy leadership of Jesus in our lives.
  • God is faithful to His promise to save, in spite of man’s unfaithfulness.

Something to do

Remember my need for a Savior…just like David needed Him too!
