Scripture:

JOSHUA 19:49-21:45, 1 CHRONICLES 6:54-81

Unchanging Gospel

And the LORD gave them rest on every side, just as he had solemnly promised their ancestors. None of their enemies could stand against them, for the LORD helped them conquer all their enemies. Not a single one of all the good promises the LORD had given to the family of Israel was left unfulfilled; everything he had spoken came true.

Joshua 21:44-45

My Takeaways

Something Old

Cities of Refuge and Levitical Towns were allotted, as well as special land allotments for Caleb and Joshua.

Something New

  • The importance of Gezer: That the World May Know: Gezer. The first Israelite occupation of Gezer was during Solomon’s reign. (Joshua 16:10–the Israelites did not dislodge the Canaanites living in Gezer.)
  • The Via Maris (Latin-Way of the Sea) was a major ancient trade route along the Mediterranean Sea that connected Egypt to Syria, Mesopotamis, the area of the Fertile Crescent. הַיָּם֙ דֶּ֤רֶךְ (derek hayam) Isaiah 9:1
  • “Summary statements which proclaim total conquest and complete subjugation of an area according to divine plan and the valiant efforts of the god’s ruler are fairly common in the royal annals of the ancient Near East…Such statements were on of the common literary features included as part of the code of conquest annals in the ancient Near East.” IVP OT Bible Background Commentary
  • Cultural things sometimes influenced the Israelites. (Ex: Joshua 24–pagans set up standing stones –to honor their god, declare covenants, or remember a special event–long before the Israelites came). This doesn’t change the gospel message.
  • God gave Cities of Refuge for any Israelite or alien living among them. This right of sanctuary was widely practiced in the ancient Near East, though Israel sought to distinguish between murder and accidental killing and sought to grant a trial. Archaeological Study Bible
  • The LORD said to Joshua,  “Now tell the Israelites to designate the cities of refuge, as I instructed Moses. Anyone who kills another person accidentally and unintentionally can run to one of these cities; they will be places of refuge from relatives seeking revenge for the person who was killed.
    Joshua 20:1-3.
Why didn’t God just tell people not to be hasty in avenging a death?

Something to do

No matter what we see in culture throughout history, the Gospel–Jesus is King–never changes!
