EXODUS 1:1-2:25, 1 CHRONICLES 6:1-3, EXODUS 3:1-4:17

Graciously Confident

But Moses pleaded with the LORD, “O Lord, I’m not very good with words. I never have been, and I’m not now, even though you have spoken to me. I get tongue-tied, and my words get tangled.” Then the LORD asked Moses, “Who makes a person’s mouth? Who decides whether people speak or do not speak, hear or do not hear, see or do not see? Is it not I, the LORD? Now go! I will be with you as you speak, and I will instruct you in what to say.”

Exodus 4:10-12

My Takeaways

Something Old

They made their lives bitter, forcing them to mix mortar and make bricks and do all the work in the fields. They were ruthless in all their demands.
Exodus 1:14

Something New

  • “The book of Exodus maintains the anonymity of the Pharaohs who have dealings with the Israelites. Since Egyptian records have preserved no accounts of the Israelites presence, enslavement, or exodus, identifying their Pharaohs can only be attempted by using vague hints contained in the narrative.” IVP Bible Background Commentary
  • The massive number of projects by these Egyptian rulers necessitated equally massive amounts of labor. When the projects were too ambitious for just native people and prisoners of war, they targeted other people groups for forced labor.
  • Brick making was a filthy job. Millions of bricks were needed. They were often more square in size, around a foot long, baked in the sun, and often stamped with the name of the current ruler.
  • The Hebrew word for Moses’ basket is the same as that used for Noah’s ark: tebah (tay-baw’) תֵּבָה
  • Reeds were probably used for the basket and coated with a mineral pitch called bitumen.
  • I AM/YHWH יהוה‎ is built from the Hebrew word “to be/he will be,” but used in the first person. Translates as LORD in the Bible, or Adonai in Hebrew.
  • Growing up in Pharaohs’ court would have afforded Moses the privilege of excellent education and training: Literature, scribal arts, warfare, foreign languages and rhetoric–which was highly prized in Egyptian society .
  • Egyptians considered foreigners inferior, so for Moses to be a foreigner and to kill an Egyptian was a great crime.
  • God told Moses that Aaron could speak for him.
  • Moses was taught all the wisdom of the Egyptians, and he was powerful in both speech and action. Acts 7:22 (Stephen’s speech to the Sanhedrin)

Something to do

Be graciously confident in the calling God has given you.
