The Begats

The sons of Abraham were Isaac and Ishmael. These are their genealogical records:
The sons of Ishmael were Nebaioth (the oldest), Kedar, Adbeel, Mibsam, Mishma, Dumah, Massa, Hadad, Tema, Jetur, Naphish, and Kedemah. These were the sons of Ishmael.
The sons of Keturah, Abraham’s concubine, were Zimran, Jokshan, Medan, Midian, Ishbak, and Shuah.
The sons of Jokshan were Sheba and Dedan.
The sons of Midian were Ephah, Epher, Hanoch, Abida, and Eldaah.
All these were descendants of Abraham through his concubine Keturah.
Abraham was the father of Isaac. The sons of Isaac were Esau and Israel.

1 Chronicles 1:28-34

My Takeaways

Something Old

Abraham married another wife, whose name was Keturah. She gave birth to Zimran, Jokshan, Medan, Midian, Ishbak, and Shuah. Jokshan was the father of Sheba and Dedan. Dedan’s descendants were the Asshurites, Letushites, and Leummites. Midian’s sons were Ephah, Epher, Hanoch, Abida, and Eldaah. These were all descendants of Abraham through Keturah.
Genesis 25:1-4

Something New

  • Genealogies matter.
  • The Bible is a record of events such as births, deaths, kings, covenants, and more.
  • The genealogies are the backdrop.
  • They are the basic part of the fabric of Scripture.
  • God created.
  • He formed.
  • He named.
  • He filled.
  • Man is to continue these activities.
  • Then God blessed them and said, “Be fruitful and multiply. Fill the earth and govern it. Reign over the fish in the sea, the birds in the sky, and all the animals that scurry along the ground.” Genesis 1:28
  • The Bible records man fulfilling this through genealogies.
  • There is purpose in the record.
  • There is a pattern in the record.
  • They reveal God’s sovereignty in the course of history.
  • In the “begats” we see how it unfolds and comes to its fullness in the person of Jesus Christ.
  • They are rich with detail.
  • They help us to see that biblical events are not isolated incidents.
  • They help our comprehension of the biblical text.
  • They help us to see we have a part in the story.

Something to do

Don’t skip the “begats”!!
