When Jesus heard his answer, he said, “There is still one thing you haven’t done. Sell all your possessions and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”

But when the man heard this he became very sad, for he was very rich.

When Jesus saw what was happening, he was angry with his disciples. He said to them, “Let the children come to me. Don’t stop them! For the Kingdom of God belongs to those who are like these children. I tell you the truth, anyone who doesn’t receive the Kingdom of God like a child will never enter it.” Then he took the children in his arms and placed his hands on their heads and blessed them.

• The rich young ruler was a prince or magistrate. 
• He was probably a Jewish ruler in a local synagogue. 
• He had great wealth. 
• Jesus did not tell him that he could be saved by works. 
• Jesus tells the man that no one is good except God. 
• Jesus tells the man that he must keep all the commandments. 
• The man thinks he is faultless concerning the Law…and Jesus challenges that. 
• The Law is God’s perfect standard. 
• The man proved that He did not measure up to God’s holiness. 
• He had another god…his wealth.
