 Likewise, all the leaders of the priests and the people became more and more unfaithful. They followed all the pagan practices of the surrounding nations, desecrating the Temple of the LORD that had been consecrated in Jerusalem.

Jeremiah 52 is an appendix to the book, probably written by someone other than the prophet Jeremiah, perhaps Baruch.

• Pharaoh Nico had taken Jehoahaz away in chains. He made Josiah's son Eliakim King and changed his name to Jehoiakim.
• Babylon under King Nebuchadnezzar invaded Judah, and Jehoiakim tried to rebel against him. Jehoiakim failed.
• Jehoiakim's son Jehoiakin then became king and only reigned for 3 months. Nebuchadnezzar encamped against the city of Judah and seized the city, captured the king, took the treasures from the temple, and took the captives to exile in Babylon. Only the poorest of the land were left.
• The king of Babylon made Jehoiakin's uncle Mattaniah king, and changed his name to Zedekiah. Zedekiah rebelled against the king of Babylon.
• The Babylonians who were besieging Jerusalem withdrew when they heard reports of Pharaoh's army marching out of Egypt. Jeremiah warned the king that Pharaoh's army would go back to Egypt and the Babylonians would still return and capture Jerusalem and burn it down.
