Scripture:

2 KINGS 20:1-11, ISAIAH 38:1-8, 2 CHRONICLES 32:24:31, ISAIAH 38:9-22, 2 KINGS 20:12-19, ISAIAH 39:1-8

Who Cares About Tomorrow?

Then Isaiah said to Hezekiah, “Listen to this message from the LORD: The time is coming when everything in your palace—all the treasures stored up by your ancestors until now—will be carried off to Babylon. Nothing will be left, says the LORD. Some of your very own sons will be taken away into exile. They will become eunuchs who will serve in the palace of Babylon’s king.”

Then Hezekiah said to Isaiah, “This message you have given me from the LORD is good.” For the king was thinking, “At least there will be peace and security during my lifetime.”

2 Kings 20:16-19

My Takeaways

Something Old

'Think of it—the LORD is ready to heal me! I will sing his praises with instruments every day of my life in the Temple of the LORD.'
Isaiah 38:20

Something New

  • Isaiah brings the word of the Lord to Hezekiah.
  • The Babylonians are going to come and take away the people of God into exile.
  • Torment and misery would come upon the people.
  • Specifically, it would come upon his own sons.
  • Hezekiah responds, “This word is good!”
  • Hezekiah is so focused on himself that as long as he has peace and security…who cares about tomorrow?
  • Hezekiah is selfish in life.
  • Hezekiah is selfish in leadership.
  • This is not the model for us today.
  • Philippians 2:1-18
  • We should have the attitude of Christ.
  • We look to others’ interests above our own, in our homes, in our families, in our workplaces, in the church, and in the world.
  • We live not for our own good, but for the good of others.
  • We trust that if we are living for others’ good for God’s glory…that is the best!
  • We pray that God saves us from our self-centeredness.

Something To Do

Do not be selfish. We are one generation passing a baton to the next…what we do matters for generations to come!
