Scripture:

PSALM 68-70, PSALM 86, PSALM 101

Imprecatory Psalms

Let their eyes go blind so they cannot see,
and make their bodies shake continually.
Pour out your fury on them;
consume them with your burning anger.

Psalm 69:23-24

My Takeaways

Something Old

Rise up, O God, and scatter your enemies.
Let those who hate God run for their lives.

Psalm 68:1

Something New

  • There are many different types of psalms in the book of Psalms.
  • Imprecatory psalms are prayers that invoke judgment, calamity, or curses upon one’s enemies or those perceived as the enemies of God.
  • An imprecatory prayer is noticeable because the psalmist writes for God to destroy or harm his enemies.
  • Many times we skip over or ignore these prayers because of their content.
  • Imprecatory prayers are found in Psalms 5, 6, 11, 12, 35, 37, 40, 52, 54, 56. 57. 58, 59, 69, 79, 83, 94, 109. 137. 139, and 143.
  • There is not a single Psalm that is only imprecatory prayers.
  • They are usually combined with the hope the psalmist has in the Lord.
  • Imprecatory prayers were prayed in times of distress.
  • These are cried to God for justice and judgment.
  • The psalmist is looking to God for vengeance and retribution, not revenge in their own hands.
  • Romans 12:19
  • Imprecatory prayers show us that God hates sin. Isaiah 6:3
  • Imprecatory prayers show us that God is sovereign. Matthew 5:45
  • Imprecatory prayers show us that God will judge the evil and the good. Ecclesiastes 3:17
  • Imprecatory prayers show us God’s mercy.
  • We pray like this now.
  • Ephesians 6:12
  • We battle against sin.
  • We cry out to God for His return.
  • We call out for God to make the world right.
  • We call out for His kingdom to come.
  • Even so, come Lord.
