Scripture:

1 CHRONICLES 26:1-28:21

Guard Duty

There were assigned by families for guard duty at the various gates, without regard to age or training, for it was all decided by means of scared lots.

1 Chronicles 26:13

My Takeaways

Something Old

Though some might see their work as humble, it was actually of great privilege. Remember the envy of the Psalmist:

I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than dwell in the tents of wickedness. Psalm 84:10 (ESV)

Gatekeepers: These had the responsibility for security, both in a practical and spiritual sense. They made sure that only those who were ready to serve and worship God could come to the temple and its associated building.

This was a trusted position.

  • 212 gatekeepers to guard the temple of the Lord
  • They served at a week at time.

There were four principal gatekeepers. There men were:

  • Trusted with the responsibility for the rooms and treasuries in the house of God.
  • Stationed around the house to guard it.
  • Responsible for the key and opening the Temple each morning.
  • Accountable for the Temple services; storing and setting them out.
  • Caring for the furnishing
  • Preparing the special flour, wine, olive oil, incense, and spices.
  • Controlled who came in and who went out of the Temple
  • Maintained order and reverence for the Temple

WOW! What an incredible responsibility!!

I am now the dwelling place of the presence of God.

WOW! What an incredible responsibility!!

Do you not know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in you?
1 Corinthians 3:16 (ESV)

My Gatekeeper is Holy Spirit. He

  • Serves 24/7, 365 days a year.
  • Is trusted with the responsibility for the rooms and treasuries in the house of God.
  • Stationed to guard me.

But when He, the Spirit of Truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth [full and complete truth]. For He will not speak on His own initiative, but He will speak whatever He hears [from the Father—the message regarding the Son], and He will disclose to you what is to come [in the future].
John 16:13 (AMPC)

The order, or disorder of the Temple, depends on my response to The Gatekeeper’s work. It is my job to work covertly with the Gatekeeper to:

  • Open the Temple each morning for service to the Lord.
  • Care for the everything in the Temple.
  • Prepare the sacrifices for my Lord.
  • Control who comes in and who goes out of the Temple.
  • Maintain order and reverence for the Temple.

Something New

There was someone in charge of the olive oil supply.

Joash was responsible for the supplies of olive oil.
1 Chronicles 27:28b

Something To Do

I need to always be on duty, and submit to my Superior.
