Scripture:

JOSHUA 19:49-21:45, 1 CHRONICLES 6:54-81

Perspective

This is a record of the towns and territory assigned by means of sacred lots to the descendants of Aaron, who were from the clan of Kohath.‍

1 Chronicles 6:54

My Takeaways

Something Old

These are the territories that Eleazar the priest, Joshua son of Nun, and the tribal leaders allocated as grants of land to the tribes of Israel by casting sacred lots in the presence of the Lord at the entrance of the Tabernacle at Shiloh. So the division of the land was completed.
Joshua 19:51

Something New

Something To Do

  • One of the great things about reading chronologically is noticing new things.
  • In the middle of reading Old Testament historical narratives, we keep jumping forward to 1 Chronicles, and we will move to 2 Chronicles later.
  • Understanding the perspective of the books helps in our reading.
  • They are not just a repeat of what we are reading in the other books.
  • 1 and 2 Chronicles are written after the Jews returned from the Exile.
  • They are not meant to be history in the same way as the other books.
  • They are meant to summarize all of the Jewish Scriptures while also pointing to the throne of the Davidic covenant.
  • They are meant to help us reflect on the whole history of God’s people and point us to a king who would come and make everything right.
  • 1 Chronicles tells the stories that tell of the Davidic throne with the purpose of pointing to Jesus Christ.
  • The ancient audience saw King David as a type of the future King.
  • We know this to be Jesus Christ.
  • 1 and 2 Chronicles help us to put history in perspective.
  • Jesus is at the center of it all.

A Quick Word

Continue to look for changes in perspective as we read. Jesus is not a New Testament surprise. The Old Testament is full of hints…if we are looking!
