Scripture:

NUMBERS 30:1-31:54

If You Make It; Don’t Break It

A man who makes a vow to the LORD or makes a pledge under oath must never break it. He must do exactly what he said he would do.

Numbers 30:2

My Takeaways

Something Old

God takes vow making very seriously.

Gotquestions.org: Verses about vows

Enduringword.org: Making vows Numbers 30:1-16

  • You have also heard that our ancestors were told, ‘You must not break your vows; you must carry out the vows you make to the Lord.’ But I say, do not make any vows! Do not say, ‘By heaven!’ because heaven is God’s throne. And do not say, ‘By the earth!’ because the earth is his footstool. And do not say, ‘By Jerusalem!’ for Jerusalem is the city of the great King. Do not even say, ‘By my head!’ for you can’t turn one hair white or black. Just say a simple, ‘Yes, I will,’ or ‘No, I won’t.’ Anything beyond this is from the evil one.
    Matthew 5:33-37
  • When you make a promise to God, don’t delay in following through, for God takes no pleasure in fools. Keep all the promises you make to him.  It is better to say nothing than to make a promise and not keep it.
    Ecclesiastes 5:4-5

Thoughtless utterances and rash promises can be avoided by living quickened to the Spirit’s leading.

  • If we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit.
    Galatians 5:25 (ESV)

"The truly good man will never need to take an oath; the truth of his sayings and the reality of his promises need no such guarantee. But the fact that oaths are still sometimes necessary is the proof that men are not good men and that this is not a good world." - William Barclay

Something New

Balaam dies… at the hands of the Israelites.

All five of the Midianite kings—Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur, and Reba—died in the battle. They also killed Balaam son of Beor with the sword.
Numbers 31:8
