Scripture:

LEVITICUS 27:1-34, NUMBERS 1:1-54

In the Desert

A year after Israel’s departure from Egypt, the LORD spoke to Moses in the Tabernacle in the wilderness of Sinai. On the first day of the second month of that year He said, “From the whole community of Israel, record the names of all the warriors by their clans and families. List all the men twenty years old or older who are able to go to war. You and Aaron must register the troops, and you will be assisted by one family leader from each tribe."‍

Numbers 1:1-4

My Takeaways

Something Old

So the Israelites did everything just as the LORD had commanded Moses.
Numbers 1:54

Something New

  • God created the entire world.
  • He planted a garden in Eden.
  • He placed the man and woman that He formed in Eden.
  • It was a place of flourishing, abundance, and God’s goodness.
  • Satan convinced Adam and Eve to believe a lie.
  • They believed the garden was lacking.
  • They denied God’s goodness.
  • They traded a garden for wilderness.
  • The story of the Bible is about the journey back to the Garden.
  • God’s people are in the desert and beginning their journey to the Promised Land.
  • The journey will be long.
  • There is no water.
  • There is no food.
  • There is no abundance.
  • They don’t believe that God’s Word can be trusted.
  • Just like Adam and Eve.
  • They are not wandering.
  • They are waiting.
  • The wilderness just means the Promise hadn’t been made sight yet.
  • The wilderness will be harsh.
  • God will provide water from rocks.
  • God will provide bread from the sky.
  • God will provide quail for meat.
  • They will have everything they need.
  • We are still longing for the Garden.
  • We are still living in the wilderness.
  • We trust God.
  • He will lead us home.
  • He will provide all we need along the way.
  • We will lack nothing.
  • The LORD is my shepherd, I lack nothing.
    ‍
    Psalm 23:1 (NIV)

Something To Do

Understand that we are longing for the Garden, and living in the wilderness…and He is enough.
