Scripture:

LEVITICUS 14:33-16:34

Jesus, Our Payment Forever

The LORD spoke to Moses after the death of Aaron’s two sons, who died after they entered the LORD’s presence and burned the wrong kind of fire before him. The LORD said to Moses, “Warn your brother, Aaron, not to enter the Most Holy Place behind the inner curtain whenever he chooses; if he does, he will die. For the Ark’s cover—the place of atonement—is there, and I myself am present in the cloud above the atonement cover.

Leviticus 16:1-2

My Takeaways

Something Old

"This is a permanent law for you, to purify the people of Israel from their sins, making them right with the LORD once each year.” Moses followed all these instructions exactly as the LORD had commanded him.
Leviticus 16:34

Something New

  • The Day of Atonement is also known as the Day of Judgment and the Sabbath of Sabbaths.
  • The Hebrew name is Yom Kippur.
  • Yom Kippur occurs on the tenth day of Tishri.
  • In 2024, for the Hebrew Year 5785, Yom Kippur begins at sundown on Friday, October 1 and ends at nightfall on Saturday, October 12.
  • The Day of Atonement is the day in which the people of Israel are to be judged by God and the sins of the nation of Israel are atoned.
  • The day pictures the transference of sin.
  • It served as a reminder that the daily, weekly, and monthly sacrifices made at the altar of burnt offering were not sufficient to atone for sin.
  • The people knew something was missing, that this was temporary.
  • Hebrews 10:1
  • Hebrews 10:4
  • Hebrews 7:19
  • Christians know that Jesus has provided for our atonement.
  • The book of Hebrews explains the ceremonies of the Day of Atonement as a pattern of the atoning work of Christ.
  • Jesus, through His own blood, effected eternal redemption for His people.
  • Hebrews 9:11-14
  • Jesus is not plan B.
  • Jesus is the center of it all.

Something To Do

As we continue to read Scripture, remember to look for Jesus at the center of it all.
