Scripture:
EXODUS 13:1-15:27
His Mighty Hand
âAnd in the future, your children will ask you, âWhat does all this mean?â Then you will tell them, âWith the power of his mighty hand, the LORD brought us out of Egypt, the place of our slavery. Pharaoh stubbornly refused to let us go, so the LORD killed all the firstborn males throughout the land of Egypt, both people and animals. That is why I now sacrifice all the firstborn males to the LORDâexcept that the firstborn sons are always bought back.â This ceremony will be like a mark branded on your hand or your forehead. It is a reminder that the power of the LORD's mighty hand brought us out of Egypt.ââ
Exodus 13:14-16
My Takeaways
Something Old
Moses took the bones of Joseph with him, for Joseph had made the sons of Israel swear to do this. He said, âGod will certainly come to help you. When he does, you must take my bones with you from this place.â
Exodus 13:19
Something New
Moses was called by God with a very important job. As an instrument in Godâs hands, Moses performed many âsignsâ or âwondersâ attempting to convince Pharaoh to allow the Israelites freedom from bondage. These are known as plagues. They are proof that the One True God was far greater than all of the multiples gods of the Egyptians. Ten Egyptian Plagues means that Egypt was completely plagued. They represent the fullness of Godâs expression of justice upon those who refuse to repent. Ten times God, through Moses, allows Pharaoh to change his mind, repent, and turn to the one true God. Each plague increases in severity of the consequences of the plagues suffered for disobedience to Godâs request to let His people go. The plagues not only demonstrated the power of God to Moses, the children of Israel, the Egyptians, and Pharaoh, but they would be remembered for all generations throughout the entire world. Water turned to blood: Hapi, Egyptian god of the Nile; pictured as a water bearer.Frogs: Heket, Egyptian goddess for fertility, water, renewal; head of a frog.Lice: Geb, Egyptian god of the Earth; over the dust of the earth. Flies: Khepri, Egyptian god of creation, movement of the Sun, rebirth; head of a fly.Death of cattle and livestock: Hathor, goddess of love and protection; head of a cow. Boils: Isis, goddess of medicine and peace; magicians are plagued as unclean. Hail: Nut, Egyptian goddess of the sky. Locusts: Seth, Egyptian god of storms and disorder; food supply is hit.Darkness: Ra, the Sun God. Death of the firstborn: Pharaoh, the ultimate power of Egypt. The children of Israel are moved to active obedience for the Passover. Something To Do
We have the opportunity daily to respond to the works of the Lord through active obedience to His Word. He is the one true Living God, and we are given the opportunity to serve Him since He has bought us back from the bondage of slavery to sin through the cross of Christ.
