Scripture:

2 SAMUEL 15:1-17:14

The Sword Shall Not Depart

A messenger soon arrived in Jerusalem to tell David, “All Israel has joined Absalom in a conspiracy against you!”

“Then we must flee at once, or it will be too late!” David urged his men. “Hurry! If we get out of the city before Absalom arrives, both we and the city of Jerusalem will be spared from disaster.”

“We are with you,” his advisers replied. “Do what you think is best.”

So the king and all his household set out at once. He left no one behind except ten of his concubines to look after the palace. The king and all his people set out on foot, pausing at the last house to let all the king’s men move past to lead the way. There were 600 men from Gath who had come with David, along with the king’s bodyguard.

2 Samuel 15:13-18

My Takeaways

Something Old

From this time on, your family will live by the sword because you have despised me by taking Uriah’s wife to be your own.
2 Samuel 12:10

  • Absalom defames God as part of his plan to overthrow David.
  • Absalom was able to turn the royal court against David.
  • David’s chief advisor turns against him and gives legitimacy to Absalom.
  • Sin spreads when left unchecked.
  • David did not arrest Absalom or take any action against him.
  • No one acted to stop Absalom’s conspiracy, so it spread quickly.
  • Sin will take you farther than you want to go, it will keep you longer than you want to stay, and it will cost you more than you want to pay.
  • Amnon is sinful.
  • Absalom is sinful.
  • David’s lack of response is sinful.
  • We need a King who has not sinned.
  • We need a King who is not of this world to administer justice for sins.
  • We need Jesus.

Something to do

Address my sin and get rid of it…and do not let it define my life!
