A Heart of Worship

Then King David was told, “The LORD has blessed Obed-edom’s household and everything he has because of the Ark of God.” So David went there and brought the Ark of God from the house of Obed-edom to the City of David with a great celebration. After the men who were carrying the Ark of the LORD had gone six steps, David sacrificed a bull and a fattened calf. And David danced before the LORD with all his might, wearing a priestly garment. So David and all the people of Israel brought up the Ark of the LORD with shouts of joy and the blowing of rams’ horns.

2 Samuel 6:12-15

My Takeaways

Something Old

But when they arrived at the threshing floor of Nacon, the oxen stumbled, and Uzzah reached out his hand and steadied the Ark of God. Then the LORD’s anger was aroused against Uzzah, and God struck him dead because of this. So Uzzah died right there beside the Ark of God.
2 Samuel 6:6-7

Something New

  • David’s earlier attempt to bring the ark of the covenant to Jerusalem stopped when God struck Uzzah dead for touching the ark.
  • David had the ark taken to the house of Obed-edom because he feared what the Lord would do.
  • God blessed the house of Obed-edom while the ark was present.
  • David decided to move forward in bringing the ark into Jerusalem.
  • David had learned a lesson.
  • Only the Levites could transport the ark.
  • The tabernacle was still at Gibeon.
  • David had a tent constructed in Jerusalem for the ark.
  • The ark came into the city with great celebration.
  • Musicians and singers from the Levites played instruments and praised God for His goodness.
  • David helped lead in the worship.
  • God’s presence was now in Jerusalem.
  • God’s presence brings blessing to Jerusalem.
  • God’s presence brings true worship.
  • Worship is not just a duty but a celebration of God’s presence and goodness.
  • But the time is coming—indeed it’s here now—when true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth. The Father is looking for those who will worship him that way.
    John 4:23
  • And so, dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you to give your bodies to God because of all he has done for you. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice—the kind he will find acceptable. This is truly the way to worship him.
    Romans 12:1
