Endor

Meanwhile, Samuel had died, and all Israel had mourned for him. He was buried in Ramah, his hometown. And Saul had banned from the land of Israel all mediums and those who consult the spirits of the dead.

The Philistines set up their camp at Shunem, and Saul gathered all the army of Israel and camped at Gilboa. When Saul saw the vast Philistine army, he became frantic with fear. He asked the LORD what he should do, but the LORD refused to answer him, either by dreams or by sacred lots or by the prophets. Saul then said to his advisers, “Find a woman who is a medium, so I can go and ask her what to do.”

His advisers replied, “There is a medium at Endor.”

So Saul disguised himself by wearing ordinary clothing instead of his royal robes. Then he went to the woman’s home at night, accompanied by two of his men.

“I have to talk to a man who has died,” he said. “Will you call up his spirit for me?”

1 Samuel 28:3-8

My Takeaways

Something Old

For example, never sacrifice your son or daughter as a burnt offering. And do not let your people practice fortune-telling, or use sorcery, or interpret omens, or engage in witchcraft, or cast spells, or function as mediums or psychics, or call forth the spirits of the dead. Anyone who does these things is detestable to the LORD. It is because the other nations have done these detestable things that the LORD your God will drive them out ahead of you.
Deuteronomy 18:10-12

Something New

  • David and Saul sinned as they lived and walked without God.
  • David lived in bondage to the Philistines and agreed to fight against Israel.
  • Saul turned to the occult and deception when God did not answer him.
  • Saul did not repent so God could hear him.
  • Saul knew that consulting with demonic forces was against God’s law.
  • Leviticus 19:31; 20:6; Deuteronomy 19:10-12; 1 Samuel 28:3
  • Saul became blind to this sin by assuming that he could turn to this sin and there would not be any consequences or punishment.
  • A believer should not do things that put you in communion with demons.
  • Believers are not to turn to horoscopes, mediums, astrologers, tarot card readers, palm readers, Ouia boards, or mind altering drugs.
  • All of these things place a believer in communion with demons.
  • “What am I trying to say? Am I saying that food offered to idols has some significance, or that idols are real gods? No, not at all. I am saying that these sacrifices are offered to demons, not to God. And I don’t want you to participate with demons. You cannot drink from the cup of the Lord and from the cup of demons, too. You cannot eat at the Lord’s Table and at the table of demons, too.”
    1 Corinthians 10:19-21
  • Satan uses tools to draw people away from the truth and into lies.
  • “Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour.”
    1 Peter 5:8

Something to do

Be alert. There is a real enemy that deceives. Trust God only.
