DEUTERONOMY 31:30-32:52, PSALM 90

Dust to Dust

LORD, through all the generations
you have been our home!
Before the mountains were born,
before you gave birth to the earth and the world,
from beginning to end, you are God.
You turn people back to dust, saying,
“Return to dust, you mortals!”

Psalm 90:1-3

My Takeaways

Something Old

Let the favor of the LORD our God be upon us,
and establish the work of our hands upon us;
yes, establish the work of our hands!
Psalm 90:17 (ESV)

Something New

  • Psalm 90 was written by Moses.
  • Psalm 90 is probably the earliest Psalm, written during the wilderness wanderings.
  • 70 people left Canaan for Egypt. Genesis 46:27
  • At the time of the Exodus, Israel had grown to a population of between 1.5 million and 2.5 million people.
  • Numbers speaks of a lot of death in Israel.
  • The nation could have been around 1.5 millions people both before and after their 40 years in the wilderness. Numbers 1:46; 26:51
  • Moses stated that all that were listed in the census had died in the wilderness except Caleb and Joshua.
  • This means that roughly 1.5 million people died in the wilderness.
  • An average of 37,500 people died per year.
  • An average of just over 100 people died per day.
  • Israel left behind a graveyard everywhere they went.
  • Moses was impacted by this and wrote.
  • Life is short because man is frail.
  • Life is short because man is sinful.
  • Man is but dust.
  • God is eternal.
  • Lovingkindness is God’s steadfast, unfailing, and loyal love.
  • Life is short because of sin and its consequences.
  • We can enjoy the good of God every short day that we have.
  • We can testify of the goodness of God every short day that we have.
  • We can be faithful to God every short day that we have.
