Scripture:

DEUTERONOMY 6:1-9:29

The Privilege of Holiness

“The LORD did not set his heart on you and choose you because you were more numerous than other nations, for you were the smallest of all nations! Rather, it was simply that the LORD loves you, and he was keeping the oath he had sworn to your ancestors. That is why the LORD rescued you with such a strong hand from your slavery and from the oppressive hand of Pharaoh, king of Egypt. Understand, therefore, that the LORD your God is indeed God. He is the faithful God who keeps his covenant for a thousand generations and lavishes his unfailing love on those who love him and obey his commands. But he does not hesitate to punish and destroy those who reject him. Therefore, you must obey all these commands, decrees, and regulations I am giving you today.

Deuteronomy 7:7-11

My Takeaways

Something Old

“Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is One.”
Deuteronomy 6:4

Something New

  • Moses continues his speech to the Israelites.
  • Moses commanded the people to cast out all the nations that inhabited Canaan when they entered the land.
  • The “--ites”: Hittites, Girgashites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites.
  • Israel was to be separate from these nations in every way because they were “holy people to the LORD.”
  • God had selected them for this privileged position, not because they were particularly special compared to other nations, but because God promised.
  • Israel’s victories would be a display of God’s power, not man’s power.
  • The same is true with God’s people today…Christians.
  • God does not need the most influential people for the Church to succeed in its mission on earth.
  • The Church will succeed in its purpose because God’s power is working through it.
  • Bonhoeffer movie
  • Bonhoeffer book
