Scripture:

NUMBERS 14:1-15:41

The Hem of His Garment

Then the LORD said to Moses, “Give the following instructions to the people of Israel: Throughout the generations to come you must make tassels for the hems of your clothing and attach them with a blue cord. When you see the tassels, you will remember and obey all the commands of the LORD instead of following your own desires and defiling yourselves, as you are prone to do. The tassels will help you remember that you must obey all my commands and be holy to your God. I am the LORD your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt that I might be your God. I am the LORD your God!”

Numbers 15:37-41

My Takeaways

Something Old

“When you finally settle in the land I am giving you, you will offer special gifts as a pleasing aroma to the LORD. These gifts may take the form of a burnt offering, a sacrifice to fulfill a vow, a voluntary offering, or an offering at any of your annual festivals, and they may be taken from your herds of cattle or your flocks of sheep and goats.
Numbers 15:2b-3

Something New

  • The Law reminds the Israelites of their position as the covenant people of God.
  • The covenant of the circumcision set them apart.
  • The way they lived set them apart.
  • The way they ate set them apart.
  • The way they dressed set them apart.
  • God knew they were prone to wander.
  • God knew they would forget.
  • He gave them ways to help them remember.
  • In the New Testament, the tassels are called “the hem” or “the fringe.”
  • Jesus wore blue tassels in the New Testament.
  • They begged him to let the sick touch at least the fringe of his robe, and all who touched him were healed.
    Matthew 14:36
  • Why don’t we have blue tassels today?
  • We don’t need them.
  • We have the Holy Spirit.
  • The Holy Spirit is a distinct person of the Trinity.
  • He is fully God.
  • When we come to faith in Jesus Christ, God gives us the Holy Spirit to dwell within us.
  • He is the Holy Spirit, who leads into all truth. The world cannot receive him, because it isn’t looking for him and doesn’t recognize him. But you know him, because he lives with you now and later will be in you.
    John 14:17
  • But you are not controlled by your sinful nature. You are controlled by the Spirit if you have the Spirit of God living in you. (And remember that those who do not have the Spirit of Christ living in them do not belong to him at all.) And Christ lives within you, so even though your body will die because of sin, the Spirit gives you life because you have been made right with God.
    Romans 8:9-10
  • The Holy Spirit softens our hearts.
  • The Holy Spirit generates our faith in Christ.
  • The Holy Spirit reminds us of truth.
  • The Holy Spirit exalts the work of Christ in our lives.
  • The Holy Spirit leads us in righteousness.
  • The Holy Spirit convicts us of sin.
  • The Holy Spirit motivates us for Kingdom work.

Something to do

Ask the Holy Spirit to help you to boldly share the Gospel that has been entrusted to you. Ask Him to lead you in a life of worship. Ask Him to give you a fire in your bones for the Kingdom work you have been prepared to do!
