Scripture:

LEVITICUS 23:1-25:23

Appointed Times

The LORD said to Moses, “Give the following instructions to the people of Israel. These are the LORD’s appointed festivals, which you are to proclaim as official days for holy assembly.

“You have six days each week for your ordinary work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath day of complete rest, an official day for holy assembly. It is the LORD’s Sabbath day, and it must be observed wherever you live.

“In addition to the Sabbath, these are the LORD’s appointed festivals, the official days for holy assembly that are to be celebrated at their proper times each year.

Leviticus 23:1-4

My Takeaways

Something Old

“In addition, you must count off seven Sabbath years, seven sets of seven years, adding up to forty-nine years in all. Then on the Day of Atonement in the fiftieth year, blow the ram’s horn loud and long throughout the land. Set this year apart as holy, a time to proclaim freedom throughout the land for all who live there. It will be a jubilee year for you, when each of you may return to the land that belonged to your ancestors and return to your own clan.
Leviticus 25:8-10

Something New

  • God uses time and space to tell us His story of redemption for His people.
  • God uses time in a very special way.
  • Chronos represents quantitative time, like the time on a clock or a calendar.
  • Kairos represents qualitative time, signifying a perfect moment or the right time for action.
  • Chronos is about minutes; Kairos is about moments.
  • God instructs His people in Leviticus 23 about the “moedim” meaning His “appointed times.”
  • God used the chronos of the moedim for kairos
  • God created light, and separated the light and darkness on day one of creation.
  • On day four of creation, He created the bodies to rule over the day and night, the sun and the moon.
  • God gave us those to count chronos time.
  • A day in the Bible is from evening to evening. The rotation of the Earth’s axis determines the length of a day.
  • A month in the Bible is defined by the moon’s revolution around the Earth. One new moon is equal to one lunar month. The lunar calendar focuses on the cycle of light and dark.
  • A year in the Bible is defined by the solar cycle. A solar year is the time it takes for the Earth to rotate around the sun.
  • Seasons are established by the relative positions of the sun and moon in relation to the Earth. The sun’s path across the sky changes as the seasons change.
  • A week is defined by God in creational order.
  • Israel’s calendar of appointed times, the feasts and festivals, was centered on their relationship with God.
  • There was never a week, month, or season in the year that did not focus on God through an appointed time…all which have their ultimate fulfillment in Jesus Christ.
  • Leviticus 23 is the single chapter of the entire Tanakh that sums up everything.
  • God’s eternal plan is revealed through the nature and timing of the seven annual Feasts of the LORD.
  • Believers are not responsible for keeping these feasts, but knowledge of them enhances and increases our faith!
  • Jesus kept every one of them.
  • Jesus fulfilled all of the Spring Feasts.
  • We live waiting for the fulfillment of the Fall Feasts.
  • God is using the chronos of the moedim to bring the kairos

Something to do

Realize that God is still working in time and space…using the minutes to bring the right moments.

A Quick Word

Complete
Mark as Complete

A small change to your Read Thru the Word experience.

Hello everyone! Recently, we experienced a problem with the "complete/incomplete" function of Read Thru the Word. We are excited to say that this function has been restored and should provide a more robust solution for the future. However, 2025 lessons that you have marked as "complete" now show as "incomplete." There are two ways to approach this: One- you can sleep well with the knowledge that you've completed January and most of February, and continue to mark "complete" on lessons moving forward. Two- If you love seeing the little blue check marks on your 2025 grid, you’ll need to revisit January and February lessons and mark them as complete again. Thank you for your patience as we work to provide an amazing daily experience while you Read Thru the Word!
