Scripture:

LEVITICUS 9:1-11:47

Purpose

Then the LORD said to Moses and Aaron, “Give the following instructions to the people of Israel.

“Of all the land animals, these are the ones you may use for food. You may eat any animal that has completely split hooves and chews the cud. You may not, however, eat the following animals that have split hooves or that chew the cud, but not both. The camel chews the cud but does not have split hooves, so it is ceremonially unclean for you. The hyrax chews the cud but does not have split hooves, so it is unclean. The hare chews the cud but does not have split hooves, so it is unclean. The pig has evenly split hooves but does not chew the cud, so it is unclean. You may not eat the meat of these animals or even touch their carcasses. They are ceremonially unclean for you.

Leviticus 11:1-8

My Takeaways

Something Old

Aaron’s sons Nadab and Abihu put coals of fire in their incense burners and sprinkled incense over them. In this way, they disobeyed the LORD by burning before him the wrong kind of fire, different than he had commanded. So fire blazed forth from the LORD’s presence and burned them up, and they died there before the LORD.
Leviticus 10:1-2

Something New

  • Leviticus begins exactly where Exodus leaves off.
  • The Tabernacle is built.
  • God’s presence has filled the Tabernacle.
  • Moses is unable to enter.
  • God is holy.
  • Man is sinful.
  • God desires to dwell with His people.
  • Their sinfulness would mean judgment in the presence of a Holy God.
  • The sacrifices act as a temporary atonement.
  • The rituals symbolically cleanse the people from their impurity, providing a way for them to dwell alongside His holiness.
  • The moral, civil, and ritual laws are for a purpose.
  • People: Israel
  • Position: Covenant people of God.
  • Place: the camp/Promised Land
  • Purpose: Lead other nations to God/Point to the Messiah
  • God’s people are to be holy (set apart), for He is Holy.
  • Israel as a nation is to be set apart from all the nations around them.
  • They will eat differently.
  • They will worship differently.
  • They will dress differently.
  • They will live differently.
  • They will be strange.
  • Leviticus shows us the holiness of God.
  • Leviticus shows us God’s desire and plan to make a way for sinful people to live in His presence.
  • Jesus is at the center of it all.

Something to do

Read Leviticus to see how much God loves His people. He will make a way.
