Scripture:

EXODUS 35:1-36:38

Shadows of Eden

For the inside of the Tabernacle, Bezalel made a special curtain of finely woven linen. He decorated it with blue, purple, and scarlet thread and with skillfully embroidered cherubim.

Exodus 36:35

My Takeaways

Something Old

Then Moses called together the whole community of Israel and told them, “These are the instructions the LORD has commanded you to follow. You have six days each week for your ordinary work, but the seventh day must be a Sabbath day of complete rest, a holy day dedicated to the Lord. Anyone who works on that day must be put to death. You must not even light a fire in any of your homes on the Sabbath.”
Exodus 35:1-3

Something New

  • We all have a desire to be at home with those we love.
  • It is one of the aspects of being made in God’s image.
  • The story of the Bible from Genesis to Revelation, is the passion of God’s heart to be at home with His people.
  • The story we read in the Bible is that it is much more about God’s desire to dwell with His people than about His people’s desire to dwell with Him.
  • The story of human history is a story of God’s ongoing intention to make His home with us in spite of our fluctuating inclinations to find our home in Him.
  • God created a sanctuary filled with goodness where He intended to dwell with His people.
  • In the details of the tabernacle’s design, we see a reflection of the paradise of Eden.
  • Just as the temple was the place of God’s unique presence experienced by the priests, so Eden was the place where God walked with Adam.
  • The same Hebrew verbal form hithpael used for God’s “walking back and forth” in the garden also describes God’s presence in the tabernacle.
  • Adam is depicted as a priest with respect to his tasks “to work” and “to keep” the garden, which is the priest’s task in the temple.
  • The cherubim assumed Adam’s function to guard the tree of life, which became memorialized in the tabernacle.
  • The tree of life was probably a model of the lampstand in the tabernacle.
  • Just as the entrance to Israel’s later temple was to face east and be on a mountain, so the entrance to Eden faced east and was situated on a mountain.
