Scripture:

GENESIS 45:16-47:27

70

The total number of Jacob’s direct descendants who went with him to Egypt, not counting his sons’ wives, was sixty-six. In addition, Joseph had two sons who were born in Egypt. So altogether, there were seventy members of Jacob’s family in the land of Egypt.

Genesis 46:26-27

My Takeaways

Something Old

Meanwhile, the people of Israel settled in the region of Goshen in Egypt. There they acquired property, and they were fruitful, and their population grew rapidly.
Genesis 47:27

Something New

  • God is telling the story of redemption.
  • He built a family from one man.
  • He will build a nation from that family.
  • The Patriarchs are the ones which God tells us their stories: Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
  • Joseph is not in the direct line.
  • The Messiah will come through the tribe of Judah.
  • The Joseph narrative explains how God’s people come to be in Egypt.
  • Joseph’s rise in power and the move of Jacob and his family meant that the people of God’s covenant promises were now living far from the Promised Land.
  • This DYSFUNCTIONAL family will now be away from home, where all that they have is each other.
  • God brought the nation Israel into existence for a purpose: to serve as His instrument of salvation for the world.
  • Genesis 12:2-3
  • Genesis closes with the descendants of the Patriarchs living in exile in Egypt.
  • The ultimate fulfillment of the promises must await a later generation.
  • The promises of God are sure.
  • For as many as are the promises of God, in Christ they are [all answered] “Yes.” So through Him we say our “Amen” to the glory of God.
    2 Corinthians 1:20 (AMP)

Something to do

Keep looking for the many ways that God, who is not bound by space or time, uses space, time, and His people to keep His promises. He never changes.
