Scripture:

REVELATION 15:1-18:24

One Big Story

Then I saw in heaven another marvelous event of great significance.

Revelation 15:1a

My Takeaways

Something Old

They will stand at a distance, terrified by her great torment. They will cry out,
“How terrible, how terrible for you,
O Babylon, you great city!
In a single moment
God’s judgment came on you.”

Revelation 18:10

Something New

  • The Bible treats God’s story as the true story that makes sense of all the other stories.
  • Exposition is the introductory section of a story that provides important background information to the audience. It can include details about the setting, characters, historical context, or previous plot events.
  • The inciting incident is the event that causes the protagonist's life to change in a dramatic way, forcing them to take a new path. Also introduces conflict.
  • Rising action is the part of a story that builds tension and suspense leading up to the climax.
  • The "climax" is the point of highest tension or turning point where the main conflict is resolved, usually marked by a confrontation between the protagonist and antagonist, signifying the most exciting and important moment in the narrative; it's the moment where the action reaches its peak and the story begins to move towards its resolution.
  • The falling action is the period of time in a story that follows the climax and leads to the resolution. It's the action that occurs after the big climax and the action shifts towards resolution instead of escalation.
  • The dĂ©nouement is the final section of a story's plot, in which loose ends are tied up, lingering questions are answered, and a sense of resolution is achieved. The shortest and most well known dĂ©nouement, it could be said, is "And they lived happily ever after." Most stories, however, require a longer concluding section to achieve a sense of resolution.
  • Revelation brings God’s big story to a glorious conclusion.
  • Hardly a verse goes by without some reference to an Old Testament phrase, theme, symbol, or vision.
  • Revelation brings together the story of Scripture into a unified whole.
  • The loose ends of the story are tied up in Revelation, and it’s a better ending than any story ever told.
  • What’s different in God’s story is that we are in it.
  • Through John’s record, we get to participate in the earth’s final days…whether we live to see it happen or not.
  • Our individual story fits into the “One Big Story” of what God has done, and continues to do.
  • We may not fully understand our place in the story while on earth.
  • We will spend eternity celebrating it.

Something To Do

Pray that God helps you to see your part in His Story, and aligns your heart to His plan.
