And you are living stones that God is building into his spiritual temple. What’s more, you are his holy priests.

1 Peter 2:5a

Jesus Christ is both the:

• salvation for the world
• stumbling of the block

With His Spirit, He causes us all to stumble, then offers us salvation.

• Some experience the stumble, and reject salvation
• Others experience the stumble, accept salvation, and become living stones, one with the Living Stone part of the spiritual church of Jesus Christ.

A living stone is used as a metaphor to illustrate the secure and intimate relationship a believer has with Jesus, the “Living Stone”.  (See Gotquestions.org)

We have responsibilities as living stones. We are to: 

• live as temporary residents: show the world the same kindness and care would give ourselves and our own property. 1 Peter 2:11 
• Guard your soul: the flesh that wages war against you. 1 Peter 2:11
• Live honorably: unbelievers are watching and could, hopefully, become a living stone. 1 Peter 2:12

Peter was an elder in the church.

And now, a word to you who are elders in the churches. I, too, am an elder and a witness to the sufferings of Christ.
1 Peter 5:1a

I am a living stone… live like it.
