And no one can become a high priest simply because he wants such an honor. He must be called by God for this work, just as Aaron was. That is why Christ did not honor himself by assuming he could become High Priest. No, he was chosen by God, who said to him,

“You are my Son.

Today I have become your Father.”

And in another passage God said to him,

“You are a priest forever in the order of Melchizedek.”

While Jesus was here on earth, he offered prayers and pleadings, with a loud cry and tears, to the one who could rescue him from death. And God heard his prayers because of his deep reverence for God. Even though Jesus was God’s Son, he learned obedience from the things he suffered. In this way, God qualified him as a perfect High Priest, and he became the source of eternal salvation for all those who obey him. And God designated him to be a High Priest in the order of Melchizedek.

Hebrews 5:4-10

So let us stop going over the basic teachings about Christ again and again. Let us go on instead and become mature in our understanding.
Hebrews 6:1a

• The author of Hebrews is making the argument that Jesus is better…greater…superior. 
• Jesus is the better hope.
• Jesus is the better covenant. 
• Jesus is the better King. 
• Jesus is the better Priest.
• But Jesus is not from the tribe of Levi. 
• He is a priest of the order of Melchizedek. 
• Melchizedek appears in Scripture in three places: Genesis 14:18-20; Psalm 110; Hebrews 5-7.
• Melchizedek was the king of Salem, which would later be the city of Jerusalem. 
• He was also a priest of the Most High God. 
• In David’s psalm, a messianic prophecy is given. 
• David says the Messiah to come would be a priest forever in the order of Melchizedek. 
• Christ sits on the throne and intercedes before the Father. 
• Christ is a Priest forever. 

Remember that Jesus is better. He is the focus of all of life.
