One Man

Caiaphas was the one who had told the other Jewish leaders, “It’s better that one man should die for the people.”

John 18:14

My Takeaways

Something Old

They went to the olive grove called Gethsemane, and Jesus said, “Sit here while I go and pray.” He took Peter, James, and John with him, and he became deeply troubled and distressed. He told them, “My soul is crushed with grief to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me.”
Mark 14:32-34

Something New

  • Caiaphas did not know that he was right about Jesus…One Man would die for the people.
  • What he had in mind was that if Jesus were to be put to death as a rebel against Rome, that might spare the rest of the Jewish nation from a similar fate, since all of the Jews resented Roman rule and fervently desired that it be overthrown.
  • Jesus came to proclaim and become God’s good news.
  • Jesus Christ was the recipient of both the covenants of Abraham and David.
  • One man came to save.
  • He was fully God and fully man.
  • The Gospel writers spoke of Jesus as Messiah…and prophesied Messiah.
  • The Gospels connect the dots between the Old Testament and Jesus.
  • Matthew talks of Jesus in a way that parallels the journey of Israel.
  • Where Israel failed, Jesus succeeded.
  • The Old Testament is filled with tension and confusion to which Jesus brings clarity and resolution.
  • The Old Testament raises questions.
  • In Christ, we have answers.
  • On the center cross at Golgotha we see the fulfillment of Caiaphas’ unintended prophecy.  Here we behold “One Man . . . dying for the people.”
