Scripture:

EZEKIEL 20:1-22:16

The Promise And Process Of Finding Life

"There [in the wilderness] I gave them my decrees and regulations so they could find life by keeping them." emphasis mine

Ezekiel 20:11

My Takeaways

Something Old

Old Testament

He gives us what we need wherever we are.

He gave His people:

The promise of life

  • There I gave them my decrees and regulations so they could find life by keeping them.
    Ezekiel 20:11

The process of obtaining life

  • They wouldn’t obey my regulations even though obedience would have given them life.
    Ezekiel 20:13b

Life: chayay (khaw-yah'ee): to live, have life, remain alive, sustain life, live prosperously, live forever, be quickened, be alive, be restored to life or health.

New Testament

He gives us what we need wherever we are.

He gives His children:

The promise of life

  • The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.
    John 10:10 (ESV)

The process of obtaining it.

  • If you cling to your life, you will lose it; but if you give up your life for me, you will find it.
    Matthew 10:39

John 10:10

Life: zóé (dzo-ay')

  • life, both of physical (present) and of spiritual (particularly future) existence. always (only) comes from and is sustained by God's self-existent life. The Lord intimately shares His gift of life with people, creating each in His image which gives all the capacity to know His eternal life.

Matthew 10:39

Life: psuché (psoo-khay')

  • "to breathe, blow" which is the root of the English words "psyche," "psychology") – soul (psyche); a person's distinct identity (unique personhood), i.e. individual personality. The soul is the direct aftermath of God breathing (blowing) His gift of life into a person, making them an ensouled being.

Something New

These verses are repeated in the same chapter.

Son of man, give the people this message from the Lord: “A sword, a sword is being sharpened and polished. It is sharpened for terrible slaughter and polished to flash like lightning!
Ezekiel 21:9-10

And now, son of man, prophesy concerning the Ammonites and their mockery. Give them this message from the Sovereign LORD: “A sword, a sword is drawn for your slaughter. It is polished to destroy, flashing like lightning!
Ezekiel 21:28

Something To Do

Believe the promise and work through the process so that I may experience the life He died for me to have.
