Elijah was afraid and fled for his life. He went to Beersheba, a town in Judah, and he left his servant there.

1 Kings 19:3

Warren Wiersbe refers to Elijah’s actions as the “Elijah complex.”

The “Elijah complex” is when someone goes from spiritual victory to spiritual defeat.

Elijah complex happens when we:

• Start living by sight, rather than by faith.
• Allow our present circumstances to determine our actions, rather the past faithfulness of God.
• Submit to our flesh, rather than stand our faith.

Elijah was in good company:

• Moses and Jesus both spent forty days and forty nights in the desert.
• David spent many nights in caves.

Later on, in the third year of the drought, the LORD said to Elijah, “Go and present yourself to King Ahab. Tell him that I will soon send rain!”
1 Kings 18:1

Did Elijah stay with the widow and her son the entire three years?

When I sense myself slipping spiritually, becoming dangerously close to the Elijah Complex:

• Live by faith, rather than sight.
• Focus on God’s past faithfulness to determine my comings and goings, rather than my present circumstances to determine our actions, rather the past faithfulness of God.
• Stand on my faith, rather than submitting to my faith.
