Scripture:

1 KINGS 8:54-66, 2 CHRONICLES 7:1-10 1, KINGS 9:1-9, 2 CHRONICLES 7:11-22, 1 KINGS 9:10-14

If

So Solomon finished the Temple of the LORD, as well as the royal palace. He completed everything he had planned to do in the construction of the Temple and the palace. Then one night the LORD appeared to Solomon and said,

“I have heard your prayer and have chosen this Temple as the place for making sacrifices. At times I might shut up the heavens so that no rain falls, or command grasshoppers to devour your crops, or send plagues among you. Then if my people who are called by my name will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sins and restore their land. My eyes will be open and my ears attentive to every prayer made in this place. For I have chosen this Temple and set it apart to be holy—a place where my name will be honored forever. I will always watch over it, for it is dear to my heart.

2 Chronicles 7:11-16

My Takeaways

Something Old

When all the people of Israel saw the fire coming down and the glorious presence of the LORD filling the Temple, they fell face down on the ground and worshiped and praised the LORD, saying,

“He is good! His faithful love endures forever!”

2 Chronicles 7:3

Something New

  • King Solomon has dedicated the Temple.
  • God spoke to Solomon in a dream.
  • God says that Israel should obey the Lord’s covenant.
  • If they do, they will enjoy the blessings…including fruitfulness of the land.
  • Deuteronomy 28:1-6, 8
  • Leviticus 26
  • Once again, we look at context.
  • This is an Old Testament passage.
  • This is written to Old Testament people calling them to be faithful to Old Covenant promises to receive Old Covenant blessings.
  • The king and his people are to keep the covenant with God.
  • If they keep the covenant, then the covenant blessings will come.
  • Blessing and cursing is tied to the land itself.
  • This is about the Hebrew people in ancient Israel.
  • Old Covenant people receiving Old Covenant promises are the context for the verses.
  • We are New Covenant people.
  • New Covenant promises and blessings are fulfilled in Jesus Christ.
  • He is better.
  • He is everything.
