Scripture:

1 KINGS 7:1-51, 2 CHRONICLES 3:15-4:22

Pillars of Faithfulness

Huram cast two bronze pillars, each 27 feet tall and 18 feet in circumference. For the tops of the pillars he cast bronze capitals, each 7-1/2 feet tall. Each capital was decorated with seven sets of latticework and interwoven chains. He also encircled the latticework with two rows of pomegranates to decorate the capitals over the pillars. The capitals on the columns inside the entry room were shaped like water lilies, and they were six feet tall. The capitals on the two pillars had 200 pomegranates in two rows around them, beside the rounded surface next to the latticework. Huram set the pillars at the entrance of the Temple, one toward the south and one toward the north. He named the one on the south Jakin, and the one on the north Boaz. The capitals on the pillars were shaped like water lilies. And so the work on the pillars was finished.

1 Kings 7:15-22

My Takeaways

Something Old

Solomon also built a palace for himself, and it took him thirteen years to complete the construction.
1 Kings 7:1

Something New

  • Solomon built God’s palace.
  • Solomon also built the king’s palace and surrounding buildings.
  • Solomon knew that the king needed to rule with justice before all the nations.
  • At this point, for a very short time, God was present in the Temple and God’s king was ruling from the palace.
  • All was right with God’s people under God’s rule…a picture of the kingdom of God that would be fulfilled in the coming Messiah.
  • Solomon’s construction centered on these truths.
  • There were two bronze pillars outside the temple entrance.
  • One pillar was named “Jaking”, which means “he will establish.”
  • 2 Samuel 7:11-13
  • This pillar was to remind the people of God’s faithfulness.
  • Another pillar was named “Boaz”, which means “in Him is strength.”
  • This pillar reminded people that the kingdom of God was established by the strength of the LORD, not by Solomon.
  • Within all the details of Scripture, even in the construction of buildings, there is a constant reminder for the people of God.
  • God is all powerful.
  • God is sovereign.
  • God is faithful.
