Then the Israelites said to Gideon, “Be our ruler! You and your son and your grandson will be our rulers, for you have rescued us from Midian.”‍

Judges 8:22

They were so desperate for a king that they would surrender to anyone, even a victorious godly someone. They had a king, God, but they continued to reject His authority and leadership. 

We aren’t too far off from the Israelites. We need leadership and direction but often feel God’s:

• Guidelines are too limiting
  Loving God means keeping his commandments, and his commandments are not burdensome. 
  1 John 5:3

• Expectations are too lofty
  Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth.
  2 Timothy 2:15 (ESV)

• Responses takes too long
  The Lord is good to those who wait for him, to the soul who seeks him. It is good that one should wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord. 
  Lamentations 3:25-26 (ESV)

And because of this, we will place anyone on the throne of our heart.

An earthly leader makes a poor god. 

What if I was desperate for God?

I wonder how old Jether was.

Turning to Jether, his oldest son, he said, “Kill them!” But Jether did not draw his sword, for he was only a boy and was afraid.
Judges 8:20

Am I desperate for God? If yes, what is the evidence? If no, why not?
