Scripture:

JOSHUA 10:1-12:6

The Promises of God

During this period Joshua destroyed all the descendants of Anak, who lived in the hill country of Hebron, Debir, Anab, and the entire hill country of Judah and Israel. He killed them all and completely destroyed their towns. None of the descendants of Anak were left in all the land of Israel, though some still remained in Gaza, Gath, and Ashdod.

So Joshua took control of the entire land, just as the LORD had instructed Moses. He gave it to the people of Israel as their special possession, dividing the land among the tribes. So the land finally had rest from war.‍

Joshua 11:21-23

My Takeaways

Something Old

So Joshua and his entire army, including his best warriors, left Gilgal and set out for Gibeon. “Do not be afraid of them,” the LORD said to Joshua, “for I have given you victory over them. Not a single one of them will be able to stand up to you.”
Joshua 10: 7-8

Something New

  • God’s people are now taking the Promised Land
  • The unbelieving generation has died.
  • Joshua, one of the faithful spies from Numbers 13 and 14, is now leading them.
  • Notice the Anakim.
  • The descendants of Anak that were so big that the faithless spies said they could not take them.
  • Joshua and Caleb had believed.
  • They believed in the power of God.
  • They believed in the presence of God.
  • They believed in the promises of God.
  • They believed forty years earlier.
  • Now it is happening.
  • It is not because the army is mightier.
  • The people believe God.
  • Joshua is leading them to do what God had called them to do.
  • God’s power was the same.
  • God’s presence was the same.
  • God’s promises were the same.
  • Faith of the people had changed.
  • Hebrews 11:1
  • We learn today from God’s people in the Old Testament.
  • We praise God for His faithfulness to His promises.
  • We praise God for His power on behalf of His people.
  • We praise God for His presence with His people, then and now.
  • He is always faithful.
  • He calls us to be faithful, too.
