My Takeaways

Something Old

I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than dwell in the tents of wickedness.
Psalm 84:10b (ESV)

Humble but important work.

“But chiefly we are concerned with the temple of the heart. We surely need the doorkeeper there, for in the history of the inner life there is so much going and coming; such troops of thoughts pour into the shrine of the soul, and pour out. And often, in the crowd, disloyal and evil thoughts intrude, which, before we know it, introduce a sense of distance and alienation from God.” - FB Meyer

They weren’t called guards. They were called keepers.

  • Guard sounds militant, and simply an assignment.
  • Keep sounds like responsibility and a privilege.

Guard:

  • to keep safe from harm or danger; protect; watch over
  • to keep under close watch in order to prevent escape

Keep:

  • to maintain (some action), especially in accordance with specific requirements, a promise
  • to hold or retain in one's possession; hold as one's own:

We are the gatekeeper of our heart. We are responsible for and have the privilege of

  • Living in accordance with the requirements of God’s Word.
  • Holding the commands, statues, and ways of God as our own possession.
  • Removing and putting to death (figuratively) unwelcome (those that draw us from Christ, rather than to Him) people and objects from our life.

How do we successfully live as the gatekeeper of our heart?

  • Know the Word so we can live the Word.
  • Submit the nudges of Holy Spirit’s.
  • Say “No,” to myself, wants, whims, and wishes.

Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life.
