Micah set up a shrine for the idol, and he made a sacred ephod and some household idols. Then he installed one of his sons as his personal priest. In those days Israel had no king; all the people did whatever seemed right in their own eyes.

Judges 17:5-6

Then Samson put his hands on the two center pillars that held up the temple. Pushing against them with both hands, he prayed, “Let me die with the Philistines.” And the temple crashed down on the Philistine rulers and all the people. So he killed more people when he died than he had during his entire lifetime.
Judges 16:29-30

• The Judges did some things that helped Israel, but also had extremely bad leadership moments. 
• The Israelites’ worship of the golden calf in Exodus was tied to ancient Near East ideas that the idol kept or animated the presence of the god being worshipped. Their sin was not worshipping the calf, but worshipping God by thinking they needed an idol to do so.
• Micah’s idol was not worshipped in and of itself, but as a supposed animation/presence of God.
• God’s presence is in His people.
• God was trying to teach His people that He was different from all other gods-that He did not need a graven image to be worshipped, because God created us in His image.
• The Bible is not God. The Bible points us to God.
• Knowing the Bible and sharing it should show others the reason for our hope.
• …but in your hearts sanctify Christ as Lord. Always be ready to make your defense to anyone who demands from you an accounting for the hope that is in you… 1 Peter 3:15 (NRSVUE)

Bear God's image well and worship the one true God by dwelling in His presence.
