Today's Sponsor of the day is

Scripture:

DEUTERONOMY 21:10-25:19

The Plight Of The Poor

When you are harvesting your crops and forget to bring in a bundle of grain from your field, don’t go back to get it. Leave it for the foreigners, orphans, and widows. Then the Lord your God will bless you in all you do.

Deuteronomy 24:19

My Takeaways

Something Old

  • Poverty is timeless and without borders.
  • Poverty doesn’t discriminate.
  • Poverty is not overlooked by God

I love that the plan of Deuteronomy 24:19, allowed the poor to be active in providing for their own needs while maintaining dignity.

  • The principle of sharing still applies.
  • God still expects His people to share with and care for the poverty-stricken.

This Levitical law is a matter of humanity, and giving to the poor is still a matter of humanity and dignity.

  • John answered, “Anyone who has two shirts should share with the one who has none, and anyone who has food should do the same.”
    Luke 3:11 (NIV)
  • But if anyone has the world's goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God's love abide in him?
    1 John 3:17 (ESV)
  • Whoever oppresses a poor man insults his Maker, but he who is generous to the needy honors him. Proverbs 14:31 (ESV)
  • Whoever is generous to the poor lends to the LORD, and he will repay him for his deed.
    Proverbs 19:17 (ESV)
  • Whoever has a bountiful eye will be blessed, for he shares his bread with the poor.
    Proverbs 22:9 (ESV)

Poverty is timeless and it doesn’t discriminate, but is to be abetted by God’s people.

Something New

If a man is discovered committing adultery, both he and the woman must die. In this way, you will purge Israel of such evil.
Deuteronomy 22:22

This makes me think of the woman caught in adultery in John 8. They certainly didn’t follow this law in the John 8 situation.

Something to do

Don’t neglect the poor. Let others see Christ in me through service and caring for others.
