Scripture:

LEVITICUS 4:1-6:30

Always Burning

Remember, the fire must be kept burning on the altar at all times. It must never go out.

Leviticus 6:13

My Takeaways

Something Old

“Suppose you sin by violating one of the LORD’s commands. Even if you are unaware of what you have done, you are guilty and will be punished for your sin. For a guilt offering, you must bring to the priest your own ram with no defects, or you may buy one of equal value. Through this process the priest will purify you from your unintentional sin, making you right with the LORD, and you will be forgiven. This is a guilt offering, for you have been guilty of an offense against the LORD.”
Leviticus 5:17-19

Something New

  • God wanted a perpetual fire…He must have had a reason.
  • God appeared to Moses in a burning bush.
  • Exodus 3:2
  • God chose the appearance of fire to lead His people.
  • Exodus 13:21-22
  • The fire for the burnt offering was commanded to keep burning.
  • It must never go out.
  • It is repeated three times!
  • The fire was not started by human hands.
  • It was started directly by God.
  • It was a reminder of God’s power.
  • There was no other source acceptable to God.
  • Any other fire offered was “strange.”
  • It was a reminder of God’s presence.
  • The shekinah glory of God was visible in the fire.
  • Atonement made at the burnt offering could only be made through God.
  • There would be no burning without God.
  • The fire endured throughout the forty years in the desert and beyond that.
  • God would light the fire on the altar of the temple as well.
  • 2 Chronicles 7:1
  • We cannot save ourselves.
  • Only God can save.

Something to do

Remember that atonement can only be made through Christ…it is not possible on our own.
