Scripture:

GENESIS 1:1-3:24

One Big Story!

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was formless and empty, and darkness covered the deep waters. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters.

Then God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. And God saw that the light was good. Then he separated the light from the darkness. God called the light “day” and the darkness “night.”

And evening passed and morning came, marking the first day.

Genesis 1:1-5

My Takeaways

Something Old

So God created human beings in his own image.
In the image of God he created them;
male and female he created them.

Genesis 1:27

Something New

  • The Bible is God’s big story of the world and everyone in it.
  • Being ignorant of the Bible is to miss the whole point of life itself!
  • There are many complicated parts to the story.
  • The plotline is simple enough for a child to understand.
  • There are lots of stories in the Bible, but all the stories are telling One Big Story.
  • The Story is of how God loves His children and comes to rescue them.
  • The Bible treats God’s story as the true story that makes sense of all the other stories.
  • The metanarrative is a single, overarching interpretation, or grand story, of reality.
  • God’s Story reveals to us God’s character through His description, action, and words.
  • In creation, God reveals Himself to be immaterial and eternal.
  • Immaterial: not bound by space.
  • Eternal: not bound by time.
  • He creates time, space, and mass in the first verse.
  • He will use time, space, and mass to tell His Story.
  • Read.
  • Pay attention to what He is telling us.
  • This is going to be life changing!
  • The Word of God Has Spoken

Something to do

Read the Bible with the idea of growing in the knowledge of God, not of information.
