“Jeremiah, say to the people, ‘This is what the LORD says:…
Jeremiah 8:4a
“If men fall it is naturally expected that they will return. In the case of Jerusalem this had not been so, their backsliding had been perpetual. There was no sign of repentance.” – G. Campbell Morgan
Why don’t people return to the Lord?
They
- never were truly saved.
- are ashamed of their sin.
- fear the judgement of other believers.
- there is plenty of time.
- think they can outwit God.
- are angry with God.
- don’t want to change.

Jeremiah asks and answers four questions in Jeremiah 8.
- Why are they backsliding? (Jeremiah 8:1-12)
Because they believe the lies and will not heed the truth of God’s Word. - Why are they sitting still? (Jeremiah 8:13-17)
Because they do not really believe the enemy is coming. - Why did they provoke God? (Jeremiah 8:18-19)
Because they believe they could serve both the LORD AND their idols. They didn’t completely abandon the LORD, they just made Him one of their many gods. - Why is there no recovery? (Jeremiah 8:20-22)
Because the people did not heed God’s warning and His long-suffering reached a limit.
Praise God, returning is ALWAYS possible. With humility and repentance, we can be completely restored to a right relationship with our King, Savior, and Creator.
- But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness.
1 John 1:9
- Have mercy on me, O God, because of your unfailing love. Because of your great compassion, blot out the stain of my sins. Wash me clean from my guilt. Purify me from my sin. For I recognize my rebellion; it haunts me day and night. Against you, and you alone, have I sin
